Aniplex 1/7 Fate/Grand Order Saber: Deluxe Edition

You know what there is already so much of in this world, but seemingly still never enough? Saber figures.

Saber from the popular Fate series has perhaps gotten more figurines than any other character in anime history. There are hundreds upon hundreds of Sabers out there ranging from action figures, statues, chibis and more. As the series continues, so too shall the production of figurines of this globally recognized gender-swapped parody of King Arthur.

I am actually new to the Fate series as I have only started checking out the series last year. I have only watched Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works. I have found myself getting into this series and am in the process of seeing more of the anime and reading the original visual novels. Due to the hundreds of Saber figures out there and my poor impulse control with money, I have given my best effort to avoid purchasing any expensive Sabers until I am sure I am into the series enough to justify purchasing anything more than $100.

After watching Unlimited Blade Works, I decided that I totally need an armored scale of the King of Knights in my collection. With the hundreds of options out there, which one should I start with? I chose to pre-order the deluxe edition of Aniplex and Stronger's 1/7 statue with her crown and cape as shown in the recent Grand Order installment to the series.

There are two versions of this product. You have the standard edition; then you have the deluxe edition, which includes extra parts and a special LED base. First, let's check out the box. The deluxe edition actually comes with two boxes. The first being the one which stores the standard edition, then there is a much thinner box which stores the Deluxe Edition parts.

Deluxe Edition

As you can see, the boxes are completely covered in appealing graphics of the figure with a mystical sky background along with some metallic colored text. Now let's move onto the main event, the figure. I'll start with what you get in the standard edition.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1492644479.jpeg

Right out of the box, I am loving how this figure presents itself. Saber stands firm and ready with her hand resting on the butt of her sword.

Kotori:
"Teehee! You said "butt." (>ヮ<)

As usual with Aniplex and Stronger figures, a lot of care and precision has gone into the details. Everything from shading, texture, sculpt, posing and everything in between has been crafted with seemingly flawless precision.

You can see how the front has a faint, yet clearly visible pattern of spots using a slightly lighter shade of blue. Even the little golden lining and ornaments of her armor have some light shading done on them. Look closely and you will see they are made with slight variants in the shade of gold.

The blue coloring along her battle gown is shaded lightly in some areas to mimic the natural look of fabric bending and flowing.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1492649333.jpeg

The armor has been given a highly lustrous coat of silver. It beautifully glitters and shines when light is cast upon it.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1492624262.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1492624264.jpeg

The face and hair is spot on. The face is shaped and painted carefully to bring out Saber's proud and noble personality. You can also see how the assorted symbols and patterns on her chest plate are finely stamped on. I don't think they were hand painted because I can see some print marks when I zoom in on them. But I may be wrong.

Does this look like the face of mercy to you?
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1492624258.jpeg

I am especially impressed with the texture of the hair and the details that went into the locks and braids. You can tell someone spent a lot of effort to get this to look just right.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1492624260.jpeg

Let's take a look at her sword, Excalibur. The hilt has been carefully painted so that all the small bits and details are refined and precise. It is all painted with lustrous and glittery coats of royal blue and gold.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1492624256.jpeg

As some of you know, Excalibur is often weilded in an invisible state using a spell called "Invisible Air." Figures of Saber featuring her sword usually have the blade fully visible with a metallic coating, or the blade is a clear material with some effect parts around it to replicate the invisibility and wind effects. What we have he is just a clear plastic blade.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1492624254.jpeg

If invisibility was what the designers were aiming for, they did a pretty darn good job here. The blade is incredibly transparent and often disappears into the background when I take pictures of it. Depending on where I put this figure, the blade practically vanishes right in front of me. Personally, I would have gone with a standard metallic blade. But I think this design is pretty neat.

Now let's look at the base. It is quite lovely, albeit a tad on the simple side. You have a clear blue base with the Servant Summoning Circle diagram clearly printed on the whole diameter of the base.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1492637963.jpeg

This figure also comes with a big fluffy cape which rests on her shoulders and is also supported from the rear with a little plastic support rod. But I have found that the support rods for the cape aren't really needed. It all holds up fine without them.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1492648127.jpeg

The pose with the cape in place is based on this Fate/Grand Order illustration, as is the deluxe edition base which you will see shortly.

http://joymepic.joyme.com/article/uploads/allimg/201504/1429579204394690.jpg

The cape is coated with a widespread coat of a shiny blue to replicate the look and feel of a soft, sleek fabric like silk or suede; whatever shiny fabric is used to make a king's cape.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1492653852.jpeg

There are some minor issues with the white paint of the fluffy lining. There are some spots on the coat of blue underneath that faintly fade through the white. I have been reading comments from other owners and it seems this is a relatively common problem with this product. I personally have not been too bothered by it. It is just a few faint blemishes in a couple of spots. Plus, I think I can patch them up if needed as the paint here is just a simple coat of white. I just need to find out what specific shade of white.

That covers everything that comes with the standard edition. Now let's look at what the Deluxe Edition gives you.

This version gives you a special LED base, a crown, a smiling face and an alternate hand part for her to hold Excalibur pointing outward.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1492688357.jpeg

You may recall I recently posts a review of the Okami Amaterasu statue by First 4 Figures and how the LED feature was not anywhere near as bright as advertised. Fortuntely, that was not the case with Saber. The light coming from this base is nice and bright. I underestimated how much light there would be and almost blinded myself with this thing so close to my face.

The LED feature actually comes with two settings. The first just has the lights turned on. The second has the lights slowly pulsate.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1492688894.jpeg

Totally random nerd thought here. When I take good look at it from above, the placement of the lights inside gives this an uncanny resemblence to the Arc Reactor in Iron Man's chest.

Set up all these extra parts and this is what you get.
SO MUCH WIN!!!!!
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1492688351.jpeg

This right here was my whole reason for getting the deluxe edition. It all captures Saber's character so perfectly. That confident smile. That gorgeously regal combination of armor, cape and crown. That bright field of crystal beneath her feet. This whole thing just oozes confidence and nobility. If Saber were a real person, I think she would be quite pleased with how this figurine looks.

And of course these extra parts give you more options to mix match to best suit your display preference. When you look back at the overhead images of the base, you will notice a small smooth bulb poking out in the top left. When using Saber's sword resting hand with this base, you place the tip of the sword into a deep fitting just behind that bulb. That small bulb is there to make the light shoot straight up through the sword. This makes it glow similar to the illustration.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1492782542.jpeg

There is a slight problem with the base, but I find it to be negligible for the most part. The pegs are a tad thinner on the deluxe base compared to the standard base, so Saber's feet are a little loose. There is no real concern about it suddenly tipping over as it still fits on tight enough to stay securely in place. I would just suggest you lift and move the figure slowly and securely when picking it up. I found this to be rather surprising considering the quality of everything else, but the worst thing I can reasonably call this is a minor inconvenience.

And what is this? It comes with a little present too!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1492688353.jpeg

I wonder what it could be. I do not recall any mention of a gift coming with this product. I can feel the anticipations in my brain rising. (◕ε◕)

Well how about that! There is a little fabric bag inside. And inside the bag is an extra crown.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1492782544.jpeg

The main crown piece is plastic, but this extra crown is made of metal; chinesium if my information is correct.

I guess the manufacturers thought people who bought this would try putting the crown on other figure's heads, so they threw in an extra crown just for that. I have tried putting this extra crown on many figures in my collection, but I find it looks pretty good on another blonde character with an ahoge.

All bow before the queen of meat!
All hail Ikumi Mito!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1492782546.jpeg

Here are my final thoughts on this figurine. If you are new to the Fate series, but are pretty sure you need at least 1 badass Saber figure in your collection, this is a pretty great choice among the hundreds of Sabers out there. I personally think this may be among the top 10 best Saber figures ever made.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1492693296.jpeg

Thank you for taking the time to read this review. I hope it has helped you in your choice in whether or not to purchase it. I have checked and it is still available at Tokyo Otaku Mode, Right Stuf Anime and Nippon Yasan. I am not sure about the stock at other shops. I would recommend TOM, which is where I bought mine.

I will now get started on my review of MegaHouse's Naruto Gals: Hinata Hyuuga. Look for that within the next couple of days. You can also expect more frequent posting of figure reviews from me within the upcoming weeks. Here is a list of other figures I have scheduled to review soon.

Very good review. Yes there are probably a literal TON of saber figures which I agree is why it is so hard to choose. But IMO 4 of them rank up top, the 3 by GSC Saber Triumphant, Saber distant lily, and Saber Alter with this one by Aniplex being the 4th of my favorites.

Though I'm liking the Saber wedding and the Saber Alter in the dress by Alter.

Like you said: There are so many Sabers. The reason why i don't own a single Saber is because of that. There are so many Sabers that i always think: There is always an opportunity to buy one instead of a lot of characters where there aren't much figures. Those LED's looks amazing. It really makes Saber looks impressive.

That is true. There will always be opportunities to get high-end Fate series figures. That cow is going to get milked till it passes out from exhaustion and dies. And it seems that cow still has a lot of vitality left in it. Thanks for reading this review. :3

rubyserpent_720 (5 kuukautta sitten) #20174125Gaaaaah. I'm really tempted to buy her and have come across her deluxe ver whilst in Japan but didn't take the chance ;A;
Her box is pretty massive (too big to bring back this time). I can't justify that I have her Okita, Alter & Anniversary Bride version (plus PO'ed Bike version & kimono version) without the original but since FGO is becoming more popular I'm holding back in case they'll do something epic in the future... that and I might take the plunge if I ever get her in game :')

I can almost guarantee that buying her directly in japan and bringing it back with you would be a hassle. Plus the two boxes are only held together with a plastic casing, but the boxes will slip out if you don't keep your hands underneath them.

As far as your temptation goes, surrender to it. Give your money to Aniplex and feel the happiness wash over your soul like a shower of grape juice. :3
