DIY Keychain Frame for Fire EmblemDIY Keychain Frame for Fire Emblem

Hey Everyone,

I want to share with you my custom frame/shadow box for my Fire Emblem Awakening Keychains specifically search.php?type... and search.php?type... + Robin

The idea began with pinterest more specifically this:

I dislike pinning them onto a cork board because that way leads to gotta collect them all madness. The frame above looked gorgeous so it got me thinking what if I wanted to create a custom one specifically related to the series? I looked into custom wood frames or laser cutting bamboo wood but both options were too expensive to justify. In the end I thought what the heck and created my own.

The PLAN:

Materials needed:

Mark of Naga stencil x 3 sheets (drawn on illustrator to size)
Foam board x 3 A2 size
Cork board x 1 sheet
Acetate film for window x 1
Sanding sponge x 1
Box cutters x 2
Stencil Knife x 1
Round magnets x 1 box (6 used)
D-Ring picture frame hangers x 2 needed
Hot glue gun
Superglue
Spray adhesive
Metal rulers
Wall mount hook thingy
Music & coffee

Materials bought and didn't get to use:
Pins for corkboard - the plastic bits were too tall and it looked ugly
Fabric - lots of stray fibers floating around and it looked messy

Process:

Overlaying stencil onto foam board to begin cutting. Spray adhesive required to stick onto board so it doesn't move.

Not too bad. Sanding required #hellyeah.jpg
*Note blood was offered to appease Grima during this stage

Prep done! 2 bases, the window and 2 frames

Prepping the holes for magnets. Let me tell you, cutting small circles in foam using stencil knife is not fun

Cookie wasn't impressed

Overall it took est 10 hours over 2 days. It was fun brainstorming the project and in the process metaphorical tears and literal blood was shed.

Let me know if you have any questions and since all I needed from box 3 was Robin the rest of the characters are un-needed (sorry everyone).

Cheers,
Ruby

rubyserpent_720 (3 vuotta sitten) #3034552The base is 5mm foamboard + 4mm corkboard so just a little shy of 1cm thickness. And I did a quick search for d-links but it just come back as the modem?

I don't know how thick your corkboard is, but maybe screw some d-links into place?

ANIMEKRAZY101 (3 vuotta sitten) #3034275Mod Podge can go directly on the foam. Most mod podge dries completely clear. They sell them in many styles too, such as matte or gloss coats. Mod podge works on paper too. The bottle itself should have a list of things it works one ect.

Thanks heaps! I'll buy it today :3

rubyserpent_720 (3 vuotta sitten) #3033479If you want to take a stab at it, the trick is to use a super sharp blade (preferably new) and carefully go over the lines once to slice the top layer then press into the cut through the foam and finally a last cut through the paper on the other side :3
Thanks for the tips! wish I knew this before I glued everything together. Since the water glue method is a bit late am I still able to apply mod podge over the paper of the foamboard and foam itself?
Cheers,
Ruby

ANIMEKRAZY101 (3 vuotta sitten) #3033248as a cosplayer i love foam. you can reinforce it using mod podge and or gesso (which is used for oil painting). you can sand either if you put on enough coats. They won't make your foam super durable or resistant to being smushed but it'll still help reinforce it. I think the thing that lends foam best stiffness is using cloth and water glue (think of paper mache). The idea is to cut out a piece of clothe and use a mix of water and glue to paste it onto the foam and when it dries, it makes the foam much stiffer/hardier. you can even do multiple layers. Hope this helps
