I'm over 18
Recently, I received one of native's latest works - Chigusa Nana (from the manga series Nana to Kaoru) sculpted in kinbaku bondage by sculptor YOSHI.

She comes tied with sculpted-on rope which can be cast off. Included in her box is a scale length of rope you can use to apply your own bondage, should you desire.

From comments I've seen (including some in a recent review by StarshipPooper), quite a few who own this figure have the desire to do so but don't know how or where to start.

That's where this tutorial comes in. I'll show you step-by-step how to build a few basic bindings on top of each other to come out with something quite nice!

Standard Warning: This is not instruction on how to tie up a living, breathing, 1:1 scale human being. Bondage can be very dangerous if done in ignorance. There is a lot of stuff you need to know (safety, physiology, mindset, etc.) and that you need to practice before you take any kind of complex rope anywhere near a consenting adult (including yourself). The ties are the same, but I've altered them in places to make them applicable to the limitations of Nana's fixed pose and to make them slightly easier.

Onward!

A Quick History Lesson

Kinbaku ("tight binding") is a Japanese style of erotic rope bondage that has its roots in the martial art of Hojō-jutsu, which was taught as a subset of skills for a warrior who needed various bindings to quickly capture opponents on a battlefield, restrain people for long periods of time during interrogation/torture and transport them over long distances.

Over time, the damaging parts of these arts (such as deliberately pressing nerves or cutting circulation) were removed and the ties themselves adapted as the use of bondage for erotic purposes (along with the decline of its use for warfare) became more developed in Japan around the 19th-20th centuries. Thus, Kinbaku is concerned with the use of simple ropes in simple but pleasingly intricate configurations combined with a number of physio-psychological techniques to create a powerful mix of experience for both binder and bind-ee.

Kinbaku is popularly known in the West as "Shibari" ("to tie/bind") for various reasons, mainly accidental. It's sometimes rendered as "nawa shibari", which is a corruption that makes no sense (lit. "rope-tying rope"). Don't sweat their usage - you're likely to be understood with either given proper context.

Preparation: Examining the Materials

First of all, let's examine our rope. It's a coreless twisted rope dyed brown to resemble treated hemp (if faithful to the manga).

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414907.jpeg

Unfolded, we see that the rope is approximately 2m long and 1-2mm wide. This figure's scale is 1/6, so this gives us the real-world equivalent of around 12m (40ft) length and ~6-8mm width - pretty much spot on as a scale model of an actual binding rope. Nana herself is ~165cm tall and has a reasonably athletic build, so this length of rope gives us a decent amount of flexibility in how we want to tie her. We could do many interesting things if we cut the rope into smaller pieces or acquired more of the same with variable lengths, but I'm not going to do that since the objective of this tutorial is to show you how to use the rope she came with.

The rope shows no damage and has been whipped at either end with a simple overhand knot. At this scale, that's fine - let's leave it as-is.

Initiation: Preparing Nana

First things first: Let's get Nana's molded rope off. Follow the instructions in her box to remove the cleverly-painted harness. Once it's off, she should look something like this:

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414908.jpeg http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414909.jpeg

Seeing a problem? The areas where the rope pressed into her tightly are actually sculpted in! It's particularly pronounced when no rope is there, so if we tie elsewhere it'll look pretty strange (especially at the front).

Therefore, let's perform a foundational tie that closely mimics what she's been sculpted for. We'll tie a basic capture and interrogation harness (ushiro takatekote) that we can then extend down into a single-hexagon variation on the tortoiseshell (kikkou) body harness to fill out the pattern sculpted into her.

Initiation: Capturing the Hands and Wrists

First, we must capture and restrain Nana in a manner that sets a solid foundation for further ties. We'll start by capturing her wrists in a way that'll keep them out of the way without cutting off blood flow.

First, remove Nana's head and lower body to keep her hair and back from getting in the way. Set them aside. Nana's wrist tie can't be removed, so we'll just pretend it isn't there.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414911.jpeg

Fold the rope in half. Grasp it just below the midpoint. The loop formed is called a bight. The rope running from the bight to the two ends of the rope (running ends) is called the standing part.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414912.jpeg

Feed the bight over her crossed wrists and wrap one full turn around them. As you bring the bight back up, pass it diagonally over the two standing parts.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414913.jpeg

Pass the bight under all the turns that wrap around Nana's wrists. This "locks" the turns and ensures they can't constrict over time and cut off blood flow to the hands. (Because of the existing rope and the limitations of the sculpt, I didn't cinch the wrapping turns. Without the cinching, this wouldn't be too difficult to escape.)

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414914.jpeg
(The bight is at top, running parts at bottom.)

Tie the bight and standing parts together with two half-hitches.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414915.jpeg
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414916.jpeg

Put Nana's lower body back on her.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414917.jpeg

Good work! Nana's wrists are bound in such a way that the tie can't accidentally cut off circulation. In addition, because we can quickly untie from the bight this part will act as a quick-release that will free the hands and wrists without having to unravel the rest of the tie first.

Foundation: Chest and Arm Harness

We want a stable anchor from which we can perform further binding. A basic interrogation tie will do splendidly.

First, bring the doubled rope that's feeding out of the wrist tie up and wrap them around her left side, just above the elbow. Pass the parts underneath her breasts and pull the rope firm. You should feel it click into the sculpted groove.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414919.jpeg

Bring the rope back around her at the same point on her right arm.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414918.jpeg

Pass the rope ends under the loop formed by the chest wrapping and tighten it up until it's snug.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414920.jpeg

Wrap the rope around her right upper arm and bring it across her chest, above the breasts.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414924.jpeg

Bring the rope around the upper arm at the same point on the opposite side.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414921.jpeg

Tighten all the lines around the chest until balanced and snug. We won't be placing any serious weight on the chest, so one pass above and below the breasts will suffice.

Pass the rope over all the lines leading to the chest and hook underneath, with the rope heading upwards.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414925.jpeg

Hitch the rope under itself, securing the loop that holds the chest lines together.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414926.jpeg

The chest lines are now stable and will hold together. Split the doubled rope into two separate lines - we'll be working with them separately now.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414927.jpeg

Take the line on your left (her right) and form a bight with it.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414928.jpeg

Pass this bight under her right arm, between the chest lines. Don't pull the whole line through - some must remain behind.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414930.jpeg

Move the bight down and around the under-breast line and pull it back between her body and arm. The head of the bight is now sticking out towards her back.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414931.jpeg

Slide the end of the rope through the bight and slowly pull on it to tighten the loop across the under-breast line.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414932.jpeg
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414933.jpeg

Repeat on the other side. Cross the two lines over each other and pass them over each of her shoulders.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414934.jpeg

Loop the line on either side over and around the upper breast line with the running end facing outward.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414935.jpeg

Bring this loop to the middle of the upper breast line. Repeat on the other side.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414936.jpeg

Loop the line on either side over and around the lower breast line with the running end facing inward.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414938.jpeg

Carefully bring this loop in between her breasts.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414940.jpeg

Repeat on the other side.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414941.jpeg
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414947.jpeg

Now, tighten up the harness by holding both lines together and giving a firm tug upwards to complete. This is the moment at which every line of the harness tightens around her and emphasises how bound she is - pull firmly, but with gusto!

Congratulations - the chest harness is now complete.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414949.jpeg
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414951.jpeg

Elaboration: Tortoiseshell Flourish

We still have some rope left, so let's tie a single tortoiseshell hexagon onto the rest of her body. This is a much-reduced version of the iconic tortoiseshell (sometimes rendered as a more simple, less stable diamond pattern) rope dress that has come to be the best-known icon of Japanese-style rope bondage.

Remove Nana's leg. Bring the lines back together into the doubled rope and tie a simple overhand knot ~4.5cm down from the point that the ropes emerge from the chest harness. Tie a second (optional) knot 2.5cm further down from that (this a joy knot, so named for reasons which I hope will quickly become obvious; you may leave it out if you prefer). Tie a third knot 3.5cm from the second.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414952.jpeg

Bring the knotted, doubled rope between her legs and over her crotch. The first knot in the sequence should fit over the indentation on her abdomen. There will be slack rope between the first knot and the chest harness - this is normal! The third knot should fit over the indentation on her lower back, just above the tail bone.

Split the doubled rope into two separate lines after the third knot and bring them up and around her waist on either side, guided by the grooves in her sculpt. Feed the lines under and into either side of the "loop" between the end of the chest harness and the first knot.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414953.jpeg

Now, we have a problem. Nana's body is already curled up, meaning that the way we bind either side of the tortoiseshell plate will be different if we want to maintain aesthetics. We'll have to cheat a little.

On Nana's right side, simply pass the rest of the cord between her right arm and body, following the groove in her sculpt.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414955.jpeg

On her left side, wrap the left side of the "loop" between the end of the chest harness and the first knot 3-4 times with your line to intertwine it and fill out the left edge of the hexagonal plate.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414953.jpeg
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414954.jpeg
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414956.jpeg

Now bring the line between her left arm and body, following the groove in her sculpt. Take this opportunity to tighten up the tortoiseshell lines, make sure the knots are where they're supposed to be and replace her leg.

Viewed from the back, you now have two running ends poking through the two spaces between her arms and her body, below the elbow. Take these running ends and loop them over and around the lines that lead to the horizontal breast bindings (we don't tie to the wrist bindings, since this would prevent us using our wrist quick-release!), with the running ends facing outward.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414957.jpeg
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414958.jpeg

Tie the two running ends together with your bend of choice. I used a quick surgeon's knot. You can use a reef knot, granny knot or any other knot you want to use, provided it holds the two ends together.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/04/25/414992.jpeg

Congratulations! You've successfully tied up Nana in an aesthetically pleasing manner that doesn't conflict with her existing sculpt. Display her proudly!

Personally, while writing this tutorial I found that it's unexpectedly challenging to work with a figure instead of a human being - she's unable to move, her surface has no give or elasticity, you're unable to pose her other than how she was sculpted and the scale means very fine manual dexterity is required. Very different, but a fun challenge!

Do you have questions? Comments? Post them - all are welcome!

WayfinderYou're welcome! But - I advise you don't use this exact tie on a person. In addition to the reasons given in the red-text warning, I had to modify a few of the subtle details in order to match the amount of rope provided (there was less than needed) and at the same time preserve display aesthetics (bringing out the back knotwork rather than making it struggle-proof, for example). Movement + human skin is quite different to frozen + PVC, so while these modifications are fantastic for Nana they unfortunately make this version of the tie much less suitable for use at full scale on humans.

awww :( I wish for rl ties lol ...
well I keep this for nana only then ^^ hope to see some more :) i rlly like bondage stuff

BoomsickleI think having the real rope on her is a great idea but at the wrong angle it just looks a little off putting especially from the back since her sculpted rope lines are so visible. Do you know of anyway to get it as accurate to the original rope but using the real rope?
Of course - if you absolutely must not have any grooves visible just pass the rope around her torso instead of over her arms when wrapping above and below the breasts then skip the cinching with a single-line bight on either side. Then improvise - you can probably use the larger amount of excess you'll have at the end to wrap the central column, for example.

Thank you for your kind words, everyone!

Misa-chanLove it! Once I have this Nana I´ll try your way of Bondage out ^^
Thanks! Share some shots when you do - I'd love to see others' results.

TonorasHope there will be more variants coming from you? :D
Perhaps! I like her a lot with the current tie so I'm reluctant to take it off her again and start from scratch. The sculpted grooves on her body also mean that there aren't a lot of options that'll look good as a base tie other than the one I've performed here.

I had a lot of fun working at scale, so what I'm thinking about instead is possibly acquiring or making some more scale rope and adding to what's currently there with "optional extras" - some leg ties or partial suspension would spice things up nicely if people want to go a little above and beyond.

AnnieAzurai'm actually more interested in how u sound so experienced in actually tying up a human....:P
anyways, good tutorial. very enjoyable to read even tho i dont have the figure.
<3 bondage tho

Thanks! One side-effect of writing this tutorial is that I've started to notice opportunities for using the poses of some of my more ecchi figures as basis for playful binding. So don't be discouraged by not owning this particular figure - the principles still apply so you can use others if you know how to see the opportunity. ;)
