GSC @ New York Toy Fair (+ Wonfes Update)GSC @ New York Toy Fair (+ Wonfes Update)Misc

For us here on MFC, this weekend is a huge deal because of this year's Winter Wonfes. It's now less than 7 hours away and as always, we're all getting hyped up in anticipation for new announcements and painted prototypes.

However, for Good Smile Company, it looks like this weekend is not just about Wonfes. While they have been prepping through teasers, they are also currently having their own fun at New York Toy Fair.

New York Toy Fair is an annual toy industry trade show held in NYC. Unlike Wonfes, it's four days long and not open to public. The goods showcased range from doll play sets for kids to figurines aimed towards adult collectors. An interesting thing to note is that although everything is intended for Western consumers, plenty of foreign companies participate. GSC is one such example.

It's no secret that for the past couple of years, GSC has been expanding to the Western market. They've participated in numerous overseas events in the past, and characters that are considered famously well-known sell well aboard. In addition, their figures lines are now including more and more non-Japanese-based franchises.

Their booth at NYTF perfectly demonstrates this. The display banners around the booth advertise Nendoroid Tracer from Overwatch and Nendoroid Link from Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Tracer is also physically on display, officially marking NYTF as her first public appearance (the Tracer in this blog's icon is from NYTF). Also displayed are the upcoming Naruto Shippuden Nendoroids (Naruto, Sasuke, and Kakashi), Portal 2 figmas (P-body and Atlas), and cards revealing Portal 2 Nendoroids underway. A poster board announces a new line of Disney and Pixar Nendoroids (11 in total to start) and in the convention hall, a large Overwatch banner with Mei and Mercy Nendoroid concept art is set up.

With NYTF and Wonfes happening almost back-to-back, I look forward to seeing GSC's Wonfest booth soon. They showed up to NYTF with actual Nendoroids announcements so I'm very curious to see how those will be handled at Wonfes - especially Overwatch. While Wonfes is ultimately GSC's main focus this weekend (and for good reason), I think it's safe to say that they put time and effort into NYTF as well.

Edit/Update:
Square Enix and Kotobukiya are also at NYTF. No announcements but they have some cool stuff too. Square Enix has Lunafreya from Final Fantasy and Aqua from Kingdom Hearts displayed. Kotobukiya has ikemen Nightwing poster.

2nd Edit/Update:
I'm an idiot - Square Enix and Kotobukiya announced a lot of new figures. Check R_Kasahara's comment below for details.

3rd Edit/Update:
Bandai also participated. They had toys specially aimed for kids and figures aimed for adults. In particular, Tamashii Buddies was heavily displayed. Because I don't keep up with this figure line, I'm not sure whether any new announcements were make. Please check MFC if curious.

Final Thoughts:
By the time I finish writing this, Winter Wonfes 2017 will have officially ended. It's been a crazy couple of hours switching tabs between Twitter, Facebook, MFC, and Google Translate. There are a ton of photos and announcements from GSC's Wonfes booth so I'd like to give some final thoughts about this past weekend. I'm not sure whether this is GSC's first time dealing with back-to-back events held in completely different locations. However, I do think this is their first time revealing large-scale announcements in such a situation (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).

Obtaining permission to create Overwatch figures is no doubt one of GSC's biggest achievements this year. Overwatch is quickly becoming one of the biggest online gaming franchises, especially in the US. I found it very interesting how not only was Tracer's first public appearance held at NYTF, but it was her colored prototype on display. At Wonfes, GSC only had her uncolored prototype. Adding to that fact that Kahotan (GSC's official blogger) didn't do a detailed blog post with Tracer before her preorders started, this leads me to believe development on Tracer is being done predominantly in the US. This may not come as a surprise since Blizzard is based there, but it's definitely something to think about.

Also adding on to Overwatch's line are new Nendoroids and Figmas. Mei and Mercy's concept designs were first revealed at NYTF. It was honestly a pretty lackluster reveal; taking up only a tiny section on a large banner's bottom section and placed in the main lobby. Wonfes on the other hand displayed the two designs at the main booth, right next to Tracer's Nendoroid, and covering over half of the display poster.

On that same banner was an announcement that wasn't revealed at NYTF - Genji Figma. Also not revealed at NYTF, but instead at Wonfes was Tracer Figma. I'm not sure how popular Figmas are compared to the Nendoroids in the West. This might all come down to a licensing issue or business decision, so once again, just something to think about.

The reveal of Disney and Pixar Nendoroid reveals were handled pretty similarly at NYTF and at Wonfes - both used a display poster containing Japanese and English text. A high-quality version of it can be found online at Wonfes' official gallery and at GSC's official English Facebook page.

Portal 2 was also handled the same at both events. The new Figmas were on display and cards were used announced the upcoming Nendoroids.

Overall, I'd say this was a very successful Wonfes and NYTF Day 1. There is lots to look forward to this year in terms of figures and GSC's continuing venture into the West. The next company who decides to follow Blizzard's lead and team up with GSC is completely up in the air. GSC might start a trend of revealing new announcements at overseas events more frequently. Two large-scale figure events happening one after another on opposite sides of the globe may never happen again.

Then again, what do I know? I'm just your average, everyday figure collector. Thanks for reading my rambling thoughts. Happy Wonfes and NYTF everyone~

No problem, and I totally understand ^^ I don't collect superhero figures either, but always keep a close eye out for new Square Enix items whenever Toy Fair and San Diego Comic-Con roll around (Koto, too, but to a lesser extent). Fortunately for my wallet, these superhero-heavy announcements mean there's nothing new I'm interested in from those companies this time, at least so far.

R_Kasahara3 vuotta sitten#18346375As for Square Enix, it looks like there are at least three new PAKs being shown there - ITEM #549155, ITEM #549157, ITEM #549158
There's a few new Kotobukiya figures too - ITEM #549184, ITEM #549185, ITEM #549186
These aren't big announcements on the scale of a dozen-plus Nendos, but still new products ^^; Both companies often reveal new figures for the first time at Toy Fair, and it seems this year isn't any different.

I'm really glad GSC is making more western figs! I hope more companies follow suit.
