Hi, I have a question, I recently preordered a few figures for May 2019, it is over 80000 yen without shipping cost. If I added the shipping cost, it will definitely went over 800USD for sure, should I be worried for US customs returning my package/collecting tax?

Okay, I think it's been well established that the OP should be fine with this particular sub-$800 shipment (since shipping is not included in customs/duty calculations), but I'm coming back to this as there is a lot of misinformation floating around here.

The duty free cap for non-gift, non-commercial importation to the USA from Japan is $800. [1, 2] It actually used to be $200 until Obama raised the de minimis cap from $200 to $800 back in 2016.

There is a bunch of small text caveats about some foreign countries getting higher (or no) duty caps due to trade agreements ($1600 cap for imports from Insular Possessions, whee!) and some items (such as alcohol etc) having different caps, but for most instances it will be $800 for importing personal merchandise and $100 for gifts.

$2500 is the hard cap which requires a Formal Entry being filed for importation, although I've seen CBP get tetchy and not allow the simple sec 321 entry for importing in excess of $2000. You'll also have to keep in mind that Japan requires an export declaration for packages that exceed 200000 yen(and so the sellers following this law will be hitting you with export processing fees even before you hit the $2000 USA import limit). Of course this also depends on if the sender/seller is declaring the actual value of the package instead of fudging it down.

The chance of getting hit with customs/duty by CBP when your shipment exceeds the custom threshold of $800 but is less than the $2000 - $2500 threshold for Formal Entry is pretty minimal (especially when processed through the USPS), but it does happen.

I've always heard that using a courier (UPS/Fed Ex/DHL) for these types of $800 - $2000 shipments increases the chance of having customs/duty applied. My own personal experience backs that up... I just had a kerfluffle with DHL about having to pay customs for a package that was worth in excess of 80000 yen (but still came under the $800 limit once you converted yen to US dollar)

If you check with USPS website Guidelines re Customs you will see they won't raise an eyebrow until the $2500 USD break-point is reached. From that point on it's the discretion of the Customs Office whether you might have to pay a duty or not.

I rarely worry bout anything coming in from AmiAmi getting damaged because they pack their merchandise to the brim.

On the other hand, I'm always biting my nails whenever I order something from a proxy like Nippon-Yasan because they gauge you for shipping but then use only the bare minimum of packing. The box is literally the same size of the item box with only a thin layer of mini-bubble wrap in between.

I hit close to 2,000 USD on an order once and didn't get hit with customs. You'll be fine.

Toy_Automata1 vuotta sitten#58421558The answer still applies regardless of what's in the box. You won't be hit with customs on $800 worth of personal goods in the US.Thanks!

Toy_Automata1 vuotta sitten#58421556I always ship EMS and they range between 8 lbs - 16 lbs. I think the highest was around 21 lbs - and that included the Play Arts Kai Fenrir with Cloud (10 lbs by itself). About half the weight-limit (lots of Figma, Bring Arts, nendo and smaller articulated figures). I'm very selective on scale figures.I see, I am more into scaled figures, but thanks for your info

Toy_Automata1 vuotta sitten#58421553Nope. My AmiAmi monthly orders are regularly $550 - $1,200. I've never been hit with customs. I'd only worry about customs if it was $2,500 or higher.$1200? Have you ever went pass the weight limit?
