Azur Lane - Prinz Eugen - 1/7 - Hyakka Ryouran ver. (Kotobukiya)Azur Lane - Prinz Eugen - 1/7 - Hyakka Ryouran ver. (Kotobukiya)Review

Hey, fellow mfc-members and welcome
to another review!

Today I'll be taking a look at ITEM #740168 the Admiral Hipper-class heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen from the popular mobile game Azur Lane. Since Kotobukiya is the manufacturer of this figure she’s allowed in MFC’s database, which makes things easier. They picked Prinz Eugen’s New Year’s skin Profusion of Flowers, which I don’t own but really like aesthetically.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Starting off with the box we get an almost gaudy design with the stylized clouds and flowers on yellow ground. A big window spans the front and top, allowing for a pretty good look at the figure. A smaller iron cross shaped one adorns the side (and makes you remember what kind of ship Prinz Eugen is) together with the artwork the figure is based on. The back and other side show some of the prettier promo shots of the figure (with the nice background). In general, you won’t feel the box is lacking when it comes to showing what’s inside.

Prinz Eugen comes in 2 blisters (if you don’t include the little one for her bonus face), one for the figure and another one for her ship parts and other props.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Fresh out of the box we’re left with 7 parts (+ bonus face if you opted for it): the main figure, base cushion, big ship part (sry, but the free interpretation when it comes to the design leaves me unable to name it correctly), 2 turrets, sake cup and one of her geta.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260081.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260082.jpeg
And ofc there’s also and instruction sheet (and one for the bonus face) in Japanese. While I think the assembly is pretty self-explanatory. The instruction sheet could be a bit more detailed.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
For the base we get a bright red square-shaped cushion. I’m definitely not fond of these kinds of bases, especially if they’re shiny as is the case here. A nice acrylic plate with a flowery motif would’ve been better imo (something like the Hanairogoromo set by Stronger), but well it is what it is.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260083.jpeg

Now, I’ve got no idea how to call this part and after asking some friends who are actually into ships and the like… well, still no clue…
Anyway, I like the subtly shiny paint and there’s a lot of detail to be found here. Sadly, there are also scratches (the shipping box was in pristine condition btw) to be found and worst of all, the whole thing is made of absolutely rigid plastic. Just getting it out of the box made incredibly creepy noises and I bet the tips will be problematic since they’re prone to breakage.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260084.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260085.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260086.jpeg

There’s also a huge ugly seem on the part where the turrets have to be attached. While we’re at it connecting the turrets to the rest is nerve-wracking, needs a significant amount of force and care (in order not to break anything), because the pegs are too big for the holes (didn’t dare using my blow drier).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260087.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260088.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260089.jpeg
In and of itself the turrets look pretty decent, with some nice details, but the paintjob could be better.

The same goes for the bow(?). In general Koto seems to have trouble with paintjobs (painting straight lines and the like).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260090.jpeg

Not gonna lie, attaching this part to the main figure was… kind of thrilling (in an unpleasant way), because the rigid plastic made creaking noises again. To get the peg into the fur collar you have to bend the damn thing a bit. -_-
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260091.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260092.jpeg
At least the pegs fit this time, but still…

I like the design of the sake cup, the shiny finish and the gold accents. Still, I would’ve preferred the liquid to be opaquer like in the promo pictures. It’s not all that accentuated and from some angles the cup just looks empty.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260093.jpeg

Fittingly the geta has a shiny red finish as well and a sculpted wavey pattern that adds a nice touch. Unfortunately, the white paint from the thong bleeds onto the lacquered part.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Prinz Eugen’s standard fp shows a flushed drunk look with her mouth forming a big o (that’s actually sculpted in). The red eyes with the eyeshadow look really nice, but I wouldn’t have bought the figure if this was the only fp, because her expression looks a little too willing for my taste.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260104.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260105.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260106.jpeg

Her bonus fp is way more fun to look at imo (but Koto and their LE bs is annoying af). The way Prinz Eugen licks her lips and smirks makes the drink look tasty and the whole situation look more pleasant. I also like how the lips have some definition to them.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260107.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260108.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260109.jpeg
Once you take a closer look at her fringe you can see some excess bits of plastic and the red strand at the side isn’t cleanly painted either, which bothers me as it’s in a very visible spot.

The subtle violet shading in her hair gives it a bit more depth, but there are a lot of seam lines in it and they do look a bit rough. Plus, I really dislike whenever it looks like hair strands were glued in later. At least I’ve got no complaints about the ship parts (hull?) attached to her head.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260110.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260111.jpeg

The same goes for the rest of her hair, there’s a particularly bad spot at the back of her head wit lots of small excess bits of plastic and a smudge at the tips touching the ground.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260112.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260113.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260114.jpeg
Other than that, the hair sculpt looks decent, but I can’t exactly unsee these things.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Prinz Eugen is wearing an iron cross collar, which looks okay~ish in terms of paint. She also has sculpted neck tendons & a collarbone, both are surprisingly hard to capture though. X3
Clothing-wise she is wearing something that reminds me of a kimono (just that it’s several sizes too small). The top part barely contains her massive chest enabling us to see some sideboobs (the mole on her right chest is quite a cute feature). The red ribbons at the side of her boobs… I wonder if they’re used to at least somewhat hold everything in place. Seeing how the fabric is straining it also shows a hint of her nipples.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260115.jpeg
I like how the silky shiny finish gives the fabric a more luxurious vibe and I’m actually pleasantly surprised that the pattern is cleanly painted (can’t say the same for the line on the collar though).

The fur collar that’s slid down her shoulders a bit has a pearlescent finish and some sculpting clearly went into creating a “furry” look, though the success was only so-so. Again, there are some seam lines to be found here that definitely should’ve been sanded down and the surface is somewhat grainy for no reason…
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260116.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260117.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260118.jpeg

Again, everything actually patterned looks very neat and pretty here, that holds true for the obi as well. I also really like the sculpting on the obijime, especially the knot. The obiage has some small oopsies in the paint but they’re less prevalent than in other places.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260119.jpeg

The sleeves look gorgeous with the intricate pattern and clean paintjob. The folds are realistic as well, suggesting heavier fabric.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260120.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260121.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260122.jpeg
Both sleeves hover over a straight ground btw, so a soft cushion base was actually a good choice (still…).

Apart from the smudges on her arm (tried “erasing” them to no avail) I’m also not completely happy with her hands. The fingers themselves look ok, but the paintjob on the nail polish is again wonky and makes the fingers look less elegant. It almost looks like she painted them only after she started drinking.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260123.jpeg

Not sure what the girth with the golden clasp is for, but it looks fairly nice.
I like the way the ribbons from her panties dig into Prinz Eugen’s skin and ow “strained” they look.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260124.jpeg

Her legs look really good, though the finish on the stockings is the wrong kind of shiny imo and instead looks tacky. Plus, the paintjob on the little ship part accessories (again no idea whart parts they’re supposed to represent) looks sloppy.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260125.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260126.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260127.jpeg

NSFW…
View spoilerHide spoilerHer underwear is pretty basic and not particularly noteworthy, but I like the subtle shading on the rims underlining how the fabric digs into her skin.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260128.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260129.jpeg
The shading on the stockings looks good and I really like how visibly sculpted her shin is (I won’t ever see it again but still). Plus, her feet are sufficiently hinted at.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Last but not least some size comparisons...
Prinz Eugen is in a kneeling position, so I took the liberty of not measuring her height. She’s supposed to be a 1/7 scale , but looks surprisingly good next to 1/8 figures like ITEM #331626 & ITEM #330951. Her proportions are just slightly off and won’t exactly bother you. Still, I’m surprised how good she looks next to the Kusuriuri.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260130.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260131.jpeg

1/7 pose no problem either as her proportions fit perfectly with them. ITEM #549455 & ITEM #549458 are a good example of that, plus, they’re clothes are rather free interpretations of traditional clothing as well.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260132.jpeg

Jibril’s face is a bit bigger than that of Prinz Eugen, but otherwise they’re a good fit as well (size-wise).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260133.jpeg

Depending on the figure eve a 1/6 figure might work, ITEM #675637 doesn’t look too bad either (just the face gives it away).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/20/2260134.jpeg
With her pose and size Prinz Eugen is surprisingly versatile in who you can display her with.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
So, I had quite a few complaints this time, some of them I’m willing to overlook and some of them I can’t (mostly the ones you see from her normal display angle). Now, I always expect these kinds of flaws since I found them on my other Koto figures as well, but considering the price tag and limited availability of this figure it’s still disappointing to see. It’s not that I hate her, in fact I quite like this figure, there should definitely be more figures of characters drinking imo. Yet she could’ve been better.

That's it for this review! Thanks for reading, I hope you liked it! ^^
If you don’t mind, I’d love some constructive criticism,
but if you don’t feel like posting any your thoughts on the figure are also very welcome. :3
Also, if there's anything in my collection you'd like to see a review of feel free to shoot me a message or something.^^

broken-Toybox4 kuukautta sitten#78472694Maybe that’s indeed the case, well, actually I hope it does for once unlike all the other manufacturers launching some sort of exclusive/premium line and not delivering on those promises.
Atem looks really great, they really nailed the gold parts! :3
I’m the same despite having played both games, at least AL kept me longer and I prefer the designs over Kancolle. Well, and that’s basically everything I need since the look/quality of a figure are incredibly important to me.
Yeah, I know they don’t exactly care about that (which is quite strange given their own role) but dwelling on that won’t really lead anywhere I suppose. Wow, you really dodged a bullet there, huh?
That’s probably it and there’s also something inherently sexy about them being flushed and kinda more relaxed than usual.^^

I assume you are referencing to WHS, which I am extremely salty about, especially when it comes to ITEM #236240 ... Speaking about premium figures, where is more information about ITEM #806156 ?! Man, I basically forgot about that one, talking in my previous comment about how the Fine Clover was the best we're going to get. o.o

Yeah I have been unboxing my smaller YGO trading figures last weekend and the gold looks so ~fine~ on even the little ones. <3

I think AL being the 'second' one also makes it harder for me to like it. Now I see the same ships and references, which already took me a while to warm up to with KC.

About the AL I mighttttt be interested in:
ITEM #740218 Those ship parts are amazing!
ITEM #914680 t u m m y
ITEM #806378 Only when more t u m m y
ITEM #806208 Adorable!
ITEM #924742 I love this artist, but not sure how this design will be in figure form.
ITEM #946048 I am actually not even a fan of this one, but a friend of mine is of the GK ITEM #803348 , so I'm curious to how it will be in prepainted form.

Oh man that is actually a pretty big list... *sweats*

Yes I especially find that strange considering their role in WWII, but I guess we have more shame about it in Europe as it started here?

Oh for sure, if customs had opened it, they would have either got it confiscated or ask me questions about it. To some extent swastika's are allowed to be in your possession for 'historical reference', but there is not an excuse like that if you buy a figure that was produced 15-20 years ago. ^^''

Maakie7 kuukautta sitten#75771464OH WOW that one is even more gorgeous! I wonder if the higher price tag makes them include more details or Koto is improving overall. I still absolutely love all the details on my Atem. I still need to fix the image hosting on the blog, but you can see some pictures here if you like: users.v4.php?cu...
For me it's that so far I can't really warm up to AL yet, although I really like some of the designs. Kan Colle also took me a while, so who knows what the future will bring. xD
Ah, don't feel bad! Tbh I have been shocked with some of my own figures as well. I got an older Mecha Musume figure based on a German plane and it has swastika's all over the box...Japan takes those symbols more lightly than most other countries... ^^'' When I got that figure I was like 'Yikes! Glad customs didn't open it.' But anyway considering this figure is 'censored' maybe Chinese censor this symbol more than Japanese.
I think for me because it looks like they are having a good time? I'll get to your Shuten Douji review soon to see what cuts they made, uh-oh! D: In general I really love her design, so I might see one of her figures getting into my collection in the future.

broken-Toybox7 kuukautta sitten#75728391They’re not bad ofc, but usually they’re not great either. They’re a mid-tier manufacturer most of the time and with their pricing that’s absolutely fine imo. That’s why I understand your surprise here (but look at what they did with ITEM #740175 if you want and even bigger one). :3
I like the other Prinz Eugen too, but kinda feel out of love with Kancolle as a whole some time ago, while I still have some lingering attachments to AL or the designs at least. The censoring is kinda funny tbh, you can censor all you want ofc but I won’t change the fact that it’s that kind of ship after all (I even felt a bit weird reviewing the figure because of it…. Way to overthink things… as always).
I dunno why I find drinking figures so alluring, but I definitely can’t deny it. Maybe I just like the lasciviousness of it?^^ Shuten Douji turned out quite nicely all things considered, but I’m still dismayed about the cuts they made to the props…

Maakie7 kuukautta sitten#75626658This is a really really nice piece by Kotobukiya! Not that Kotobukiya is bad, but I actually would not have expected this to be their figure. ^^' I understand you are not 100% satisfied especially with the release price, but I really think this is a good piece by Koto's standards.
I do have more of a soft spot for the 'other' Prinz Eugen ENTRY #81063 . I do think it's funny with this figure (or her whole design? not known with Azur Lane) how the Iron Crosses are 'censored' on the boat parts, but they did give her an Iron Cross necklace, hrmmm.
About the more drinking characters, ITEM #464632 (which you already have (ordered)) hits most of my moe points. <3 Maybe I'll get her too someday. <3

LadyLavellan1 vuotta sitten#64303474Not a fan of the not-so-delicate hands/messy nail polish as well as the messy sculpt at the back of her hair but otherwise her kimono is goooorgeous. Love the care they put into that at least. I also really enjoy the paint they used in those mechanic parts. I'm a sucker for metallic paints. She's not quite as pretty as the official pics but she's a looker nontheless. A worthy addition to the collection!
Very detailed review as always! Thanks for the in-depth look and all the pics!
Thank you! :3
You're definitely right, the Kimono is gorgeous. Would've been even better if they had included the red parts from the original illustration, but she'd be more of a space hog then. I love metallic paint too, if it's done well, which isn't exactly the case here with all those scratches.
Still, I wouldn't say she's unbearably bad (far from it), she's still quite charming and will (hopefully) look even better with some of my upcoming figures. :3

Oof, I didn't realize that there was an exclusive faceplate :/ The quality is a bit questionable in some areas, but I'm still excited to see the product in hands. I love Prinz so hopefully it'll allow me to look past some flaws
Thank you! :3
I love her too (first ship I married) and this skin for that matter and she'll be a great fit with some Kimono figures I'm waiting for, but the QC at her price point is kinda sad.
