REVIEW: F.O.C Studio Kuchiki Rukia GK resin figure
I received my FIRST ever resin figure this week, and was super excited to do the unboxing! This resin figure features Kuchiki Rukia from the Bleach series, manufactured by F.O.C Studio.

Rukia is probably my absolute favourite female manga/anime character of all time, and has remained so for many years. I am still bitter over the fact that Kubo Tite created a great character for potential development only to sideline her in the end - despite Rukia being featured on COUNTLESS Bleach merchandise alongside lead male Ichigo. (also bitter about the fact that Kubo could have created what would surely have been one of the power couples in the manga/anime world but he did not - but that's fine, I will just go write my fanfiction in the corner over there XD)

Needless to say, when I first started the collecting hobby 2 years ago, I went about looking for official Rukia figures in the market - only to be disappointed with how little and unrefined they were.

Two months ago however, I chanced across photos of a new unpainted Kuchiki Rukia resin prototype from F.O.C Studio, an unlicensed resin GK studio based in China. I decided this was the ONLY Rukia I had come across and liked enough as a decent figure, so I put down a pre-order. My order was put in even before the final painted version was unveiled because the preorder slots were limited (the early bird pre-orders were already all snapped up) and whatever remaining were selling out quick.

I paid the remaining balance when the figure was released last month, and she arrived at my doorstep yesterday! This is my first resin figure, I had been playing with the idea of getting one for some time - but I have also read the horror stories of broken statues, shipping problems, custom charges etc. So I thought this was a perfect choice: she is a favourite character and in a safe 1/8 scale so I could get some first-time purchase experience.

I thought I may have got off lucky on the shipping part - the figures are shipped out in official boxes and as I got one straight from an official distributor, they sent the official outer protective box just like that. The figure box fits just snugly into that outer box, with NO protection whatsoever (nothing, no bubble wrap, it's just a tight fit). When the box with the studio logo arrived, I almost had a panic attack looking for telltale signs to damage inside. Thankfully, it looked pretty good.

THE BOX & PACKAGING: 8/10
The box is really simple, it is a white box with no windows (layers upon layers of grey foam would make a very ugly display, wouldn't it? XD). I love the front of the box because I am Rukia-biased - loved how they have the famous beautiful big glossy image of her on the front. The back is just plain white and the sides have her Division number character, the Thirteenth Division, printed on it.

https://i.postimg.cc/dQX5KnmP/20191106-200551.jpg
A very simple box design, all in all.

The packaging did its job well. They used standard grey foam in multiple layers with separate parts of the figures packed in tightly in separate compartments, further sealed with plastic and bubble wrap. Nothing was damaged.

THE BASE: 8/10
Being resin, the quality base is definitely heavy - and looks polished and classy. The base has the large number Thirteen (Rukia's division) in raised black characters against a white background. I like how the studio did not detract from the original design - the numbers are typically displayed black against a white background and it gives off a nice familiarity of the Divisions in the series especially when one hasn't seen or read the series in a long time. There are two holes in the base - the bigger one fits a metal peg in Rukia's right foot and a mini one at the front for Kon.

This base design is uniform throughout this figure line, with each base featuring the division number of the figure. I like the glossy brown paint over the sides and the grey shading over the white on the periphery.

The bottom of the base is textured black velvet - a nice touch.

THE SCULPT: 9/10
THE PAINT: 9/10

The proper figure is made up of 8 separate parts - the head, the body (with a removable right arm), the base, the sword, sword ribbon, sword sheath, Kon, and the figure number plate.

https://i.postimg.cc/1zHWhQMJ/20191106-203114.jpg

The two prominent characteristics of Rukia are her eyes and hair - and I personally feel the studio delivered well on those aspects. The face is sculpted well and in likeness to the character, and the eyes are painted very well in the original purple colour. Her expression is serious, and appropriate to the battle pose.

The hair is sculpted surprisingly well too, despite the plain short hair of the character.

https://i.postimg.cc/YCRxL6Vb/20191106-211412.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/sg4T9dBP/20191106-211553.jpg

The hair ends at the back are sculpted nice and sharp. The hair strands and curve are good so it doesn't look bland.

https://i.postimg.cc/mrZ8mXMv/20191106-211504.jpg

The Shinigami robe is a plain black, also a comparatively boring apparel. Here, it is sculpted well too - the sleeves are in motion, floating outward. The paintwork is decent. The peg over the right arm is removable and rather loose - and it tends to move out of the socket when I try to adjust the sword position on the hand.

https://i.postimg.cc/Zqqx89zZ/20191106-211720.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/cJDT2RBr/20191106-211602.jpg

I love her hakama - the sculpt is excellent here with the sharp straight folds. Mine came with no imperfections.

https://i.postimg.cc/bJQ8xdR3/20191106-211732.jpghttps://i.postimg.cc/SQfkj2RK/20191106-211751.jpg

Her traditional shoes are also well-detailed and painted.

https://i.postimg.cc/K8R290NK/20191106-211742.jpg

Sode no Shirayuki, Rukia's Zanpaktou (the most beautiful blade in Soul Society) is painted well. The work over the sheath is a little less refined. The sword slides into her right hand, and the sheath into her white belt on the left.

https://i.postimg.cc/wxLnrrZP/20191106-212343.jpg
The sword ribbon is probably the most FRAGILE part of the entire figure - it is made of very bendable and light translucent PVC. It has a silver wire which fits into a hole on the sword pommel. The wire and bead quality here feels rather cheap, but it does its job. The ribbon can be positioned however desired but as a result, it is also rather loose and moves easily even if you nudge the figure a little.

https://i.postimg.cc/cCRj8KfZ/20191106-212413.jpg
The clear beads give a slight crystal feel to the sword pommel.

https://i.postimg.cc/qRhcF975/20191106-212540.jpg

The additional Kon accessory that came with this figure is absolutely ADORABLE. When I first saw the pre-order, it was listed that Kon would only come with a certain number of the first batch of pre-orders. At the time I placed my pre-order, there were only 2 slots remaining so I did not have high hopes of getting the Kon accessory. But I did and it is really cute and well detailed. It is made from resin as well and has some weight.

https://i.postimg.cc/RVPmQkc5/20191106-211948.jpghttps://i.postimg.cc/qRf4622N/20191106-212019.jpg
There are some sloppy paintwork over the lines on Kon's face and the cross at the back of his head, but overall the accessory is really good and the pose is cute.

https://i.postimg.cc/fRph1Y28/20191106-212054.jpghttps://i.postimg.cc/Y0RHPVZF/20191106-212115.jpg

The number plate of the figure is a small carved wooden plate, very light and simple. My number is 309/310. It was my first time ordering a resin figure and I assume the numbers do follow the order number exactly, as my pre-order was indeed the second last when I made it. I thought the wood went along nicely with the overall figure.

THE POSE: 10/10
I give this pose full marks because there really is no better trademark pose of Rukia than this dynamic one - the First Dance, Tsukishiro of her blade. The translucent sword ribbon creates a pretty arc across the figure without obstructing her face.

FINAL THOUGHTS
This was my first resin figure, and I found the craftsmanship to be really good in general. It is definitely a much heavier but more fragile type of figure - a guarantee break if she falls from a certain height that would not otherwise cause much damage to a PVC.

This Rukia figure is excellent, it shows her in a trademark battle pose, the sculpt and paint is very good and it has multiple detailed accessories that are easy to manipulate. I never truly liked Rukia's hairstyle post-timeskip - it was too short for my liking. I preferred her first hairstyle (like this figure) and then her eventual long hair. So for me, this figure is probably lasting a very long time in my collection as it portrays the character in the appearance I love the most (unless another company came out with a more impressive pose or Rukia in Bankai form :D)

I would have liked a more secure right arm and a tighter fit for the sword ribbon but other than those, I think this figure is excellent and I'd say is the best Rukia figure for me so far. (and Kon is such a cute optional addition to his Nee-san)

https://i.postimg.cc/4xs53L8Y/20191106-212744.jpg

This figure is a standard 1/8 scale and pretty much stands well in comparison to the general Megahouse 1/8 scales, as seen with the Portrait of Pirates figures.

I'd rate this figure a 9.0/10. I hope you enjoyed the review, thanks for reading!

CONS
- Loose sword ribbon
- Somewhat loose right arm (acceptable though, as it is resin)
- Plain box
- May be missing Kon accessory if purchasing in the aftermarket

Poiyudachi (1 kuukautta sitten) #70140472I actually don't know too much about the companies that make resin statues so i don't know when preorders will be available or what statues they'll be releasing. Yeah preordering is always the way to go since they're limited in numbers. I'm still hoping for the day an Ulquiorra segunda etapa statue is released though, insta pre order for me!

evenstar88 (1 kuukautta sitten) #70063298Thanks for the comment, and I really agree about the sculpt. :)
Some of the resin studios are quite affordable, especially if you get the statues during their pre-order period :) (one of the things I like about the unlicensed GK studios is that the benefits of pre-ordering are significant - the earlier you order, the better the price you will get. Very good marketing in a sense XD).

Good luck with your collection! :D I think this FOC Bleach line is affordable compared to the other studios, and when the figures are put together, they look real nice like this one:

Wow that picture is breathtaking! And really impressive is the way those statues are being presented on these luminous boards. Very impressive...
Still I would really love for more of them to have fighting poses... I just think there is so much potential, when I remember the bankais or the great fights ;-)

She looks like she came out of the manga, they really did a great job on the sculpt. It's a shame the resin statues are pretty expensive or I would buy some of them

thanks for the great review!

Thank you! :) And I apologize for having only one photo of her shoes (my ancient phone cannot get clear close-ups XD) but yes her shoes are very detailed. I love Kon too, his pose is so cute and hilarious!

evenstar88 (1 kuukautta sitten) #70043328I like the Tsume Toshiro too, and am also looking forward to Ryu Studio's upcoming Toshiro. I just went to look at the Square Enix Ichigo, it's fabulous - I never knew of that statue before, so thank you! :D
I thought the licensed Zaraki by Ryu Studio was pretty good. ITEM #716550
And yes, I think I have seen pictures of the Unohana statue - it's her as the first Kenpachi with a blood sword right?

Yes, it is her as the first kenpachi!

nightjellie (1 kuukautta sitten) #70043613Omg rukia looks so pretty! Love the design of the figure btw!
Sadly she don't have any decent PVC figures as compared to Ichigo & Toushiro :/
She is also one of my top favourite anime characters to date~

She does, doesn't she? :) And yes, I totally agree about the lack of PVC Rukia figures, and thus me being swayed to the resin side for this one. XD
